Windows Installer is Disabled/Corrupted ??

Hi,

One of the casualties of my crash several weeks ago was the Installer. Even
though I "recovered" from said crash, I know I still have some repair/clean
install decisions ahead, and the sooner the decision is made to do it, the
better off I'll be.

Originally the culprit was the dreaded message "Windows cannot load because
the following file is missing or corrupted:

\WIN\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

Press "r" to repair at the first screen..."

The above is not verbatim, but I hope you get the idea : )

For some reason, my Desktop eventually came back, unlike my friend's sys
about which I address clean install issues in a previous post.

This morning (PST zone), I attempted to install the latest version of iTunes
for Windows...no soap. The Installer won't run...sorry, can't remember the
exact wording or number of the error message : / This is on top of other
failed Installer attempts such as "Please wait while Windows configures
Norton AntiVirus 2005" and its accompanying (?) error message "This MSI must
be launched through setup." The NAV error message message cursor remains the
hour glass as long as I have my system on, speaking of which, I can't rely on
the "Turn Off Computer" path to do its thing; I have to hard-shut down at the
power switch : (

Can anyone help me with any/all of these issue?

THANKS!

Goob (sorry for the length of this post)

Hi Goob,

Oddly enough, I ran into a similiar problem recently. The problem was a MSIE
process running on the system, and apparently stuck. No other MSIE requests
would function.

I was able to work around it by disabling all the norton services, then
killing the Norton processes using Process Explorer (SYSInternals.com),
killing the MSIE process, and then rebooting.

On reboot, MSIE was no longer having issues and I could install at will.

BTW:

I removed the Norton products, and reinstalled, just to be safe.

Hope this helps.

Good luck,

Doug.

Doug,

What a nice guy you are for answering : ) THANK YOU!!!

Are you in the mood to step-by-step me with what you did so I can follow
along reading your stuff while fixing my own system?

Thanks! At your convenience...

I'm afraid that wouldn't be practicle even it I could find the time.

The two steps are pretty stright forward. Download process explorer first,
and then use it to see if there are any MSIE processes running. Kill any that
are (right click o nthe process for a list of options).

You can disable the Norton services using the services tool found under
administrative tools.

If you reboot and the problem is gone, you can remove the norton tools from
the add/remove programs tool in the control panel. Then reboot and reinstall
the norton stuff.

You won't break anything if you kill MSIE processes. Just reboot and you
will be back where you started. You can always restart any service you
disabled as well, so recovery is easy

Give it a shot.

Good luck.

Doug.
