Windows Installer "internal error"

I'm trying the default install of vmware on XP and I'm getting
"Internal Error 2235 LockObject". I tried installing the latest
version of Installer (Alice in Wonderland?) but it said I already have
the latest version, so that's not it. I really am not familiar with
Installer problems.... before this problem, I didn't even know there
was an "installer database". What do I do?

I'm not getting any of the symptoms outlined on that page. That page
seems to be for problems around the Installer not starting at all, and
I'm not having that problem. It is starting, but running into an error.
