Windows Installer Error 1722

I was trying to download a program this morning, required for my employment.
I received an error 1722 message saying, "Problem with Windows Installer
package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected."

I have Windows XP Version 2002, Service Pack 3. I went to Windows and
updated my Windows Installer. I have rebooted a number of times, but I am
still unable to accomplish the download, and get the same original error 1722
message.

Over the weekend I tried to download a driver required by my new ebookwise
reader, and the installation failed. I don't know why -- I've gotten
sidelined with this, so I have not called their customer support number yet.
I don't know if that has anything to do with this problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Many thanks in advance.
