Windows Installer corrupted

Gerry

Compaq Notebook with WinXP Prof. and SP2 installed. My system got slower and
slower and I decided to cut some services at startup. Norton warned: E-mail
scanning no longer functioning. Add/Remove would not allow the removal or
re-installation of Norton's Antivirus. I removed all Symantec files and
folders manually and my system is back up to normal speed.

Trying to install or uninstall other programs no longer works. Message says:
Windows Installer is corrupted or not installed. Downloading a Windows
Installer file-update from the MS-site completed OK, but could not be
installed: Message was that the installer is included in SP.2 and is already
loaded.

I don't have a Windows Prof. Install disk for the notebook. Can I copy the
Windows-Installer from my Desktop's WindowsXP-Home CD and how could that be
accomplished?

Thank you for your time,

Gerry

Thanks for your quick reply, Andrew, after the change from manual to
Automatic I am getting "InstallShield" message:
1608: unable to create Install Driver instance. Return Code:2147221021
What can I do next?
