Hey, I tried running the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, and get
this error:

I tried searching, couldn't find the exact problem. What could I do to

Please ignore that link, as it addresses the error in Line #1. Yours is line
#21. Check the Event logs for more information about the error. Wondering if
this is a Windows Installer problem.

I should have thought to add what was in the event viewer. Anyway, it
seems to give two events, both are 'Error', SidebySide, and events 58
and 59 respectively:

Syntax error in manifest or policy file
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexec.exe" on line 0.

and

Generate Activation Context failed for C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexec.exe.
Reference error message: The operation completed successfully.

The reason I am trying to use the WI cleanup utility is because Live
Messenger will not install. Thanks!

Installer cleanup utility was released in 03,why would it work in 06 with
all the updates.Leave it alone...

Perhaps installing the latest Windows Installer engine would help.

Windows Installer 3.1 v2 (3.1.4000.2435) is available:

Well, it still seemed relevant (Last Review:September 22, 2006), plus
it doesn't state it is from 2003, and it worked for someone else. And I
don't give up, so it was worth trying to remedy the situation. I
definitely don't know MS enough to know when this or that was released!

Now installing doesn't seem to work. I tried installing GAIM, and it
worked until the actual installation part, then an error came up. I
then tried Miranda, and it would not start at all, the installation
that is. I tried some of this, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798,
to no avail. Anything else I could try? Thanks very much.

Seems to be something to do with ActiveX to, as a program I use gave
error messages when starting up, the first being "ActiveX Component
Can't Create Object". So I found this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/296205. I'll keep looking into it, if
anyone has any ideas it would be appreciated.

Got the cleanup utility to work, seems to have been some sort of
conflict with my firewall. WLM still would not work though.

Thanks for the update, Bozlo. Which firewall application is that?

WLM has a Connection Troubleshooter, which may help in case of any
connectivity issues. Also, there is a newsgroup dedicated to Messenger.
