Windows IDE controller

A little while ago I had a problem with my dvd-rw. Basically it was stuck in
PIO mode and thus dvd's or any other large file accessed form the dvd-rw
would result in stuttering sound, video and slow OS performance. I don't
know what program was forcing this mode onto my IDE controller - the only
posibilities are:

1. Trend Micro Pc-Cillin internet security 2007
2. Paint.Net
3. Norton Partition Magic (had been used to increase the size of my OS
partition by easting into my data partition)
4. TrueCrypt
5. SmartFTP client

These are the only pieces of software i installed prior to this problem
occuring. However, I have upgraded my system to a Gigabyte 965p-ds3, 2gig of
ddr2, xfx nvidia 7900gt, intel dual core 6600 and wd 250gig sata 2 with 16mb
cache.

- Yes, all my software and hardware is up-to-date (firmware, bios etc)
- No, it isn't my dvd-rw as i have tested with multiple other drives and the
same problem occured
- Yes, i have tried re-installing drivers
- Yes, i've run sfc /scannow along with chkdisc etc

Therefore this has to be a software/driver issue i'm not aware of.

I did find a workaround however. By using a sata converter (pata form dvd-rw
to sata on my motherboard) i nolonger have this problem. Ie. my dvd-rw is
running at "ultra dma mode 2" instead of being stuck at "pio only".

Unfortunately i thought that this would be ok seeing as i have 6 sata ports
and only use 1 with my hard drive. However i have been told that Nero 7
won't work with drives connected via sata rather than pata. Which is
annoying seeing as i like Nero and now i'm not sure which is the best
burning software to use that will work with sata drives.

If anyone knows of issues with the software/hardware i have described -
please reply this post.

Actually what you proved was that the original issue was with the
hardware on your motherboard - the IDE drive connector. Continuing
problems with a drive using PIO mode are almost always
hardware-related, not software-related. The solution unfortunately is
to either use the workaround of the controller card and find burning
software that will work with SATA optical or to replace your
motherboard.
