"Windows has been shut down to prevent damage..."

Erehwon

Starting a few months ago when shutting down the computer (XP SP1) the
shutdown occasionally stops with a blue screen indicating "A problem has
been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your
computer...". "Tech Info" on this screen indicates STOP: 0x0000007E
(0xC0000005, 0x804EB3BD, 0xECF099AC, 0xECF096AC). After shutting down and
restarting, everything appears to be running normally. The error report
tracking info indicates a driver problem, but I haven't added or upgraded
any drivers since I first got the machine 6 months ago. Any suggestions?

Check the info at Jim Eshelman's site http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.php#0x7e
You might want to try reinstalling or upgrading the driver.

Start>All Programs> Windows update.
Check for availabel drivers. If newer drivers are available, you can
download and install. This is generally the case with new computers.

I just put together a pc and installed XP pro, everything's been fine the
first week, then just today my explorer wouldn't open, and it kept saying
that a problem occurred and it had to close down. It did it so much that you
couldn't get online at all. then I found the cable modem folder and hit
repair. It said it failed repairing, but it appearantly worked enough to
where I could get back online w/o that message coming up. The main problem
I'm having now is that windows seems to just randomly shut down w/o a message
popping up or anything. I do have a firewall and antivirus software up and
runing, and there is no type of virus showing up when i scan it. please
help. I wish I could give you more details but there realy aren't any. thx,

-Larry

Larry it would be better if you were to start your own thread rather than
piggy backing onto one started by TxNative. That way more people will
respond.

Your problem could be related to any of a number of things including
software or hardware issues. Random shutdowns can be caused by hardware
problems.

- One thing to check is your power connection. Ensure you have everything
properly seated. If possible have your computer on it's own circuit or at
least not on a circuit with other appliances that cut in. Power "brown-outs"
can also be a source of aggravation and can cause a spontaneous shut down.

- System overheating can also be a problem. Some systems have a BIOS setting
that monitors internal temp for CPU, fans etc. The system might be set to
shut down if the temp is too hot. Check your CPU fan to ensure it is running
smoothly. The same goes for the power supply fan. Try running the system
without the cover on it for awhile. You might need better airflow or add
additional case fans.

- What is your powersupply rated at? The more hardware you add the more
power you need. If you bought the system with a 300Watt powersupply but have
added additional hard drives, CD or DVD devices you might need to beef up
the powersupply to 400 - 500 Watts.

- Flaky RAM can be a real problem. If you have more than one stick of RAM
try removing a stick and run the system for awhile to see if the problem
disappears. If not swap in the other stick and run for awhile. Unless you
are running some very resource intensive programs XP will run fine with 256
MB memory
