Windows Genuine Validation, Updating Failed After Installing XP Ho

Guest

My Dell Dimension 8200 hard disk drive went bad. Had to replace it with a
clean compatible hard drive. I deleted the existing partition and reformatted
with NTFS.

I reinstalled Windows XP Home using the Dell reinstallation CD. Started the
Windows Update process. when I got to Windows Genuine Validation, updating
failed. The error message was 0x80004005 Windows Product Activation error.

I was never prompted to enter the 25 alpha-numeric windows Product ID Key.

I called Dell. They told me to call Microsoft. MS said this was an OEM CD
from Dell. Their advice was to go to the MS support website or call the 800
number.

What do I need to do to get Windows reinstalled, activated and updated?

Whom do you have a contract with?

If 'Dell' doesn't show proper reaction, write to Mr Michael Dell;-)

You are already installed, and most Dell's are Bios-Locked, so you won't
need to activate. Your problem is with validation (WGA), and getting
updates. At the link above, you can get all the critical updates off of
MS's download server without the need to validate.

On the matter of who is responsible for Windows XP support, it is Dell if
you have Windows XP OEM and Microsoft if you have Windows XP retail.

Dell created the WGA spyware? That's news to me.
