Based outside of Houston, I have a customer with branch offices scattered
around Texas & Oklahoma.
Recently at the Tulsa office, the computers have had the Windows Genuine
Advantage Notification pop up start.
The user has just been hitting the resolve later button, but this is a
concern to me. The computers were already there when I started working with
this company & they aren't sure where they came from.
I thought you had to validate XP within 30 days of installation, or it would
stop working & these computers are way more than 30 days old.
What will happen if I tell them to hit the "Get Genuine" button?
Could this be a pirated copy of XP?
What should I (or my customer ) do?
At first glance, it doesn't appear that any of the cases have the sticker on
them that comes with an OEM version...

Description of the Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications application

On the computers in question:

Please follow this simple troubleshooting procedure:

1. Download and run the MGA Diagnostic Tool:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

2. After running the MGA Diagnostic Tool, click
on the "Windows" tab and then click on "Copy to Clipboard".

3. Next, visit the following website and create a post in the
"WGA Validation Problems" forum and paste the
results of the WGA Diagnostic Data in a detailed post.
http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/default.aspx?SiteID=25

4. A WGA troubleshooting specialist will analyze the data and
recommend an appropriate solution.

These computers are plainly in need of a regime change. Considering that
you're only about 200 miles from Crawford, I suggest that you simply invade
Tulsa. You'll be greeted as a liberator, they'll throw flowers at you, and
all of their problems will be solved.

If he doesn't want to make the long 200 mile trip, he can always download
the regime change by picking a distro from here:

Oh, sure. A knock-off of a forty-year-old operating system designed by a
money-losing division of your local telephone company and enhanced by people
who thought the DOS commands were not arcane enough.

Yeah windows is such a well designed OS, now how do I get that
paperclip to offer me tips on picking up chicks??

Besides a "forty-year-old operating system" that has proved itself to be
stable and secure and has been evolving continuously is much better than a
toy operating system that takes 6 years between releases. If one is running
XP one is running a truly OLD operating system by today's standards.

I'll give it a try, but what happens if it turns out to not be legit?
Will it disable the computer? I am trying to locate the guy who put
these computers in there & ask him a question or two.
As far as the other responses I've gotten, I'd expect that in
alt.os.windows-xp but not here...

Theres a good chance it isn't legit, theres also equal chance it is
legit, i have a friend who bought a brand new pc with xp included and
genuine installed itself and said its not genuine, boohoo, its crap,
dont pay any attention to it, no it wont disable your pc, no the feds
wont show up at your door over it, and there is a class action suit
against ms for this very program for being classed as spyware, if i
were you, i would google crack ms genuine and download the dll file
that disables this stupid program.

Flamer.
