windows genuine advantage executable invalidated my copy of window

I was running win xp professional for a long time on my computer. A friend
built it and I guess he used a pirated copy of win xp. I didn't realize this
until they started validating xp for extra xp updates.

Anyways, I went ahead and paid the 150 to get the windows genuine advantage
update so I could validate my copy of windows. I got my new key by e-mail and
was directed to a download site where I downloaded an executable that was
suppose to legitimize my win xp. I ran it, rebooted, and now a bubble appears
saying that my windows is pirated. It's never done that before.

I have active x controls allowed and all of that. Any ideas on how to fix
this problem?

The disk is in the mail and I just hope I don't have to nix everything and
start from scratch with the new xp disk.

The Genuine Advantage Product Key Update Tool is only valid for
users attempting to change their current non-genuine Product Key
to a genuine COA sticker or genuine Product Key - all without a reinstall! http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=50346&clcid=0x409

If the above does not work, then you'll need to wait for the CD
to arrive, then perform a "repair install".
