windows freezes during start up

when i turn on my computer Windows freezes and does not finish loading.

i have tried starting it in safe mode and last known good config, but the
same thing happens.

I don't have the XP home cd (XP came already installed on my machine). I do
have the HP "restore" cd's...however...even though I back up my data
regularly, there are a couple of files that I would like to retreive, if
possible.

how do i get windows functional again and is there any chance of getting to
the files?

It maybe partial hardware failure and if you will wait some time it will
continue on to finish the boot up.

Is there any error message?

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Keep pressing the
F8 key during StartUp and select option - Disable automatic restart on
system failure.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

What is the make and model of your computer. Is it a desktop or a
laptop.

Have you tried booting with all peripherals e.g printer etc
disconnected except for your keyboard, mouse and monitor?

Hope this helps.

tried several times over the past week, with the same thinking, but so far,
with no results

I don't know if HP offers any non destructive recovery options, but here are
several options for retrieving those important files before trying the HP
recovery.

1. Install the drive as a slave drive in another XP or Windows 2000
computer and copy the data.
2. Install the drive in an external drive enclosure and connect that
through USB to another XP or windows 2000 computer and copy the data.
3. Create a bootable Bart's PE disk, boot from it and copy the data to a
flash drive.
4. Create a bootable linux CD with a distro of Knoppix. Boot from it and
copy the data to flash drive or if there are two CD drives, one of which is
a burner, use the k3b program on the linux CD to burn the data to CD.
5. Take the drive to a competent computer tech to retrieve the data.

Hi,
I have exactly the same problem. Any luck in solving it?

As for my computer, I can start windows in safe mode and everything
seems fine. After safe mode, windows starts properly a couple a time
and then freeze again on subsequent startups.

The only thing I noticed is that windows updated itself yesterday. Is
there any correlation?

Thanks.
