Windows Firewall

Ok, so i'm pretty well educated in computers, and building them. This is a
simple problem I have never run across before. A few programs won't connect
to the web, morpheus and AIM 6.0, and I believe it's because of windows
firewall. When I have attempted to disable windows firewall to test the
problem, the check box for disable is greyed out, and there is a bar at the
top of the page that says "For your security, some settings are controlled by
group policy" I can't figure out how to turn this thing off, someone help me
please?

What operating system are you using and is the computer a member of an
Active Directory domain? Try running rsop.msc in the run box to see if it
shows that Group Policy settings are enabled for Windows Firewall. Rsop.msc
will not work on XP Home.

OK. It sounds like you may have use an internet protection package to lock
certain settings to try and prevent malware from changing them. You may have
allowed the application to do so and were not even aware of it such as with
Spybot Search and Destroy. So check any such applications for such settings
or try to manually delete/change the appropriate registry settings with the
one shown below probably causing your issue. There is a free utility called
Dial-a-fix that can help you detect and remove such registry entries. Also
you can simply stop the Windows Firewall service if you just want to
temporarily shut down the Windows Firewall. It is also possible that an
internet protection package [spyware/antivirus/internet security] is causing
your problem so I would also try booting into Safe Mode with networking to
see if the problem still persists and it does not then a startup
service/process is the culprit and using msconfig can help you track that
down.

wouldn't know where to begin..how would I go about using the registry code
you gave me below?

If you know how to edit the registry then you can use regedit to find and
delete the key below if it is found by navigating to it and then right click
and select delete. Otherwise give Dial-a-fix a try where it will identify
such registry keys [Group Policy type restrictions] and then allow you to
delete them.

Ok..Got DAF, found the registry entry, and removed it. Restarted the system,
and was able to turn off the firewall. Problem 1 solved.

Unfortunately, this didn't solve problem number 2. I still can't get a
connection with certain applications. I can browse the web fine, and

no connection. Same when I try to do an install download such as morpheus,

It sounds like you may have another application/process doing some IP
filtering assuming that an internet router or firewall device is not doing
it. Did you try booting into Safe Mode with networking to see what happens
and if so what were the results??

What should I have done in safe mode? Just boot into it and try doing the
same processes that were prohibited before?

Also, we have a small network here, my roomate has a router that we all run
off, maybe that's the problem?

Yes. Safe Mode will stop most non critical system services/processes from
starting as it is a mode used for troubleshooting. Safe Mode with networking
will allow networking to function. So if you boot into Safe Mode with
networking and everything works fine then it is a startup service or logon
process that is causing the problem which you can troubleshoot using
msconfig in selective startup mode to try and find the culprit via a trial
and error method. The router could be the problem if it is blocking ports
needed for the applications you run but unless the router has been modified
from the default state then that is unlikely and you could see if the same
applications run on his or another computer that uses that router for
internet access which would most likely rule out the router unless it has
restrictions for specific IP address or IP address range.

I would try first doing selective startup with services disabled and if that
does not work try disabling startup items. Once you find what category it is
in you need to try and disable a couple of selections at a time until you
narrow it down to the offending service/process. Most likely it is not a
Microsoft service or startup process with the possible exception of the
ipsec service or Windows Firewall service if you are not running SP2..

Anything related to an "internet security" package would be a start. Try
disabling all the startup items first because if that does not fix the
problem there is no sense trying to narrow it down further than that.

So you are saying that when you use msconfig in selective startup and you
disable [uncheck] both system services and startup items hit OK and then
reboot that the problem still happens??

I would try first doing selective startup with services disabled and if
that
does not work try disabling startup items. Once you find what category it
is
in you need to try and disable a couple of selections at a time until you
narrow it down to the offending service/process. Most likely it is not a
Microsoft service or startup process with the possible exception of the
ipsec service or Windows Firewall service if you are not running SP2..

Which items/tab should i be looking at in msconfig? I tried a few

:

Ok...so I tried safe mode, and it worked as it should, no
problems...I'm
not
sure which items to play with in msconfig though..almost there :)

:

Yes. Safe Mode will stop most non critical system services/processes
from
starting as it is a mode used for troubleshooting. Safe Mode with
networking
will allow networking to function. So if you boot into Safe Mode
with
networking and everything works fine then it is a startup service or
logon
process that is causing the problem which you can troubleshoot using
msconfig in selective startup mode to try and find the culprit via a
trial
and error method. The router could be the problem if it is blocking
ports
needed for the applications you run but unless the router has been
modified
from the default state then that is unlikely and you could see if
the
same
applications run on his or another computer that uses that router
for
internet access which would most likely rule out the router unless
it
has
restrictions for specific IP address or IP address range.

Steve

So I should boot into safe mode and try loading the programs that
wouldn't
work before??

Also, my roomate has a router in his room which is what I run off
of,
maybe
that's the problem?

:

It sounds like you may have another application/process doing
some
IP
filtering assuming that an internet router or firewall device is
not
doing
it. Did you try booting into Safe Mode with networking to see
what
happens
and if so what were the results??

Ok..Got DAF, found the registry entry, and removed it.
Restarted
the
system,
and was able to turn off the firewall. Problem 1 solved.

Unfortunately, this didn't solve problem number 2. I still
can't
get a
connection with certain applications. I can browse the web
fine,
and
download files fine. I can't sign into AIM 6.0, it acts as
though
there
is
no connection. Same when I try to do an install download such
as
morpheus,
where the installer application itself has to connect to a
server
to
download
installation files, again acts as there's no connection. I'm
still
stumped..

:

If you know how to edit the registry then you can use regedit
to
find
and
delete the key below if it is found by navigating to it and
then
right
click
and select delete. Otherwise give Dial-a-fix a try where it
will
identify
such registry keys [Group Policy type restrictions] and then
allow you
to
delete them.

I haven't really done too much work with the registry...I
know
how to
get
into it, and edit it, but I wouldn't know where to begin
with
the
registry
code you gave me...

:

OK. It sounds like you may have use an internet protection
package
to
lock
certain settings to try and prevent malware from changing
them. You
may
have
allowed the application to do so and were not even aware of
it
such
as
with
Spybot Search and Destroy. So check any such applications
for
such
settings
or try to manually delete/change the appropriate registry
settings
with
the
one shown below probably causing your issue. There is a
free
utility
called
Dial-a-fix that can help you detect and remove such
registry
entries.
Also
you can simply stop the Windows Firewall service if you
just
want
to
temporarily shut down the Windows Firewall. It is also
possible
that
an
internet protection package [spyware/antivirus/internet
security]
is
causing
your problem so I would also try booting into Safe Mode
with
networking
to
see if the problem still persists and it does not then a
startup
service/process is the culprit and using msconfig can help
you
track
that
down.
