when my cousin turned on her computer, avast warning came up, warning of a
trojan called newdotnet she tried deleting it did not seem to delete it, so
she restarted her computer once desk top comes up the first message she gets
is a run dll error which mentions newdotnet, then she gets avast warnings
that its not protecting her email, she also gets notification that no
firewall is turned on, but when she goes in to try to enable it she can't
enable it, she also has avg antvirus installed and is working, but the email
protection is not fully functioning , she has tried various restore points
they don't work, as in they wont restore, there are system check points
only, there are no system restore points available, once restarted, no
restore points have been completed, nothing has been downloaded in a long
time and she can't go oniline though all modem connections are working, any
help would be appreciated, thanks

If you are using any version of Sun Java that is prior to JRE Version 5.0,
then you are strongly urged to remove any/all versions that are prior to
JRE/JSE
Version 5.0. There are vulnerabilities in them and they are actively being
exploited.
It is possible that is how you got infected with malware.

Therefore, it is highly suggested that if there are any prior versions of
Sun Java
to Version 5 on the PC that they be removed and Sun Java JRE/JSE Version 5.0
Update 7
be installed ASAP.

Simple check, look under...
C:\Program Files\Java

The only folder under that folder should be the latest version...

C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_07

http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

For non-viral malware...

Please download, install and update the following software...

* Ad-aware SE v1.06
http://www.lavasoft.de/
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
http://www.lavasoft.de/ms/index.htm

* SpyBot Search and Destroy v1.4
http://security.kolla.de/
http://www.safer-networking.org/microsoft.en.html

* SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html

After the software is updated, I suggest scanning the system in Safe Mode.

I also suggest downloading, installing and updating BHODemon for any Browser
Helper Objects
that may be on the PC.

* BHODemon

For viral malware...

* Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go
through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in
Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web
site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot
the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or
you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have
downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe
Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to
run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal
Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more
comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

"...nothing has been downloaded in a long time..."

Including virus definitions, apparently.

The only solution is to completely remove the virus. If that can't be done
online, the computer needs to be brought to a professional technician.

its hard to say what type of newdotnet you may have, but maybe it might help
you to determine what exactly you have by doing a search engine on newdotnet
.... there seems to be a valid and invalid version of that of that pesky
problem..... also, you might want to use a couple of different anti spywares
since each usually find different spywares. don't be surprised if one of them
finds avast has built an adware file on your pc that you will be able to
delete....

hi thanks a lot for your replies, but unfortunately it has not fixed the
problem, i have gone to pc.review and someone posted the same problem, there
was no solution there, i have found out on other sites that the problem is
that newdotnet.dll file allows internet access and has been deleted, she
cannot restore her computer to a previous date, she had tried all dates, is
it possible to download the newdotnet.dll file from one of the sites which
provides it onto a disk and allow her to download it to her computer from
the disk? thanks a lot for your replies and support

You miss the point;
The PC is infected, the restore points are infected
newdotnet.dll is an infection
You need to turn off sys restore then clean the sys

I had a similar problem with some other spywares. Though I'd love to be
helpfull and step by step you through the cleaning process here...I know
of a much more efficient way. They helped me out, was done in an
afternoon, and they are really quick with replies. Go to
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/
register there, click discussion and you will be in the forum. Find the
appropriate topic to post yoour problem in, you will be redirected and
advised to download a few tools and then walked step by step through the
cleaning process. When you finish, they will give you a list of
suggestions to keep your computer clean in the future as well.

if you do a search on this newsgroup for newdotnet, you wil find this problem
and some possible solutions too....

my guess is that deleting the file(s) may or may not get you back on the
net. you may have to kill the process in your task manager before it allows
you to delete the dll file. however, if you were successful of removing this
pest, then you could reinstall whatever internet connecting software you had
previously....

ps: the internet connections that might be affect is the tcp which is a
windows component and can be reinstalled via your add/remove programs
