Windows Firewall setting not persistent

Michael T

I put a check mark in my Windows XP firewall to "Protect My Computer".

But after I boot my computer I have to recheck it each time. This problem
just stated in the last 1-2 weeks.

It will not stay set.

Does anyone know why?

I was told that it is because I do not have Automatic Updates set to on, but
I set it to ON and no change.

I did recently install Norton AntiVirus 2005, but do not see a connection to
this problem. Although I should mention that this has added a new Windows XP
Service named "Norton Antivirus Firewall Monitor". NOTE: I am not using
Norton's firewall software - only NAV,

I have installed WinXP SP2 and all recent updates when running Windows
Update.

A Google search revealed that someone else supported this same problem, but
no resolution was offered.

As always, thank you in advance.

You only need, and should, use one firewall. Use Norton's
and forget about Windows XP's firewall.

Norton's firewall offers more advanced control over the traffic that passes
through your computer and you also might wish to block outgoing traffic
(that is the traffic from your computer out to the Internet). The firewall
within Windows XP blocks only incoming, not outgoing, traffic.

Actually, NAV 2005 does have a firewall in it. It has something called
"Internet Worm Blocking". This is probably why the Windows Firewall is
constantly being disabled unless you have actively gone into NAV's
options and disabled the Internet Worm Blocking.

If you have disabled IWB, then here are some other things to check out
regarding the Windows Firewall:

FIREWALL DEAD, or other network issues:

MS antispyware tool disables Windows Firewall (or to reset firewall):
Start>Run cmd [enter]
netsh winsock reset catalog [enter]
Follow prompts and reboot.

Thanks Malke.

As you and Carey Frisch posted (and the following article from PC Magazine
suggests), I should substitute Windows Firewall with my new version of
Norton Antivirus 2005 - with its Internet Worm Protection.

This article also suggests I install ZoneAlarm Pro, which I do a while back.
So all is OK as best I can tell.

Excellent. I'm glad you got it sorted. Thanks for taking the time to let
us know.
