Windows Firewall Question

Kevin

Does having two firewalls running at the same time, for example Windows
Firewall and Norton Internet Worm protection, cause any problems when
installing software? Both of these firewalls were on at the same time when I
installed Microsoft Office. Could this have caused any problems with
installation?

In general, what are the problems with running two firewalls at the same
time?

thanks, Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Yes, it seems there usually is problems. They could conflict, if one
firewall does not block an application from it's normal communication,
the other very well may. My advice to you would be to drop both the
firewalls you are using now. Any Norton bundled software is crap and
usually creates more problems than it fixes. The Windows firewall is
only half a firewall because it only blocks things from coming in your
computer, it does not block things going out like spyware sending your
personal data out if you have any. You might want to try the free
firewall from Zone alarm though. I find it to be a good product and the
price is right. Hope this helps.

Norton Internet Worm Protection isn't a firewall, so the question
becomes moot.

In general, what are the problems with running two firewalls at the same
time?

To answer your specific question:

Running two software firewalls simultaneously is unnecessary and
can sometimes cause conflicts, possibly negating the protection of both.
In any event, having two firewalls running simultaneously is an
unnecessary drain on system resources.

Bruce: The Norton Internet Worm Protection is a form of firewall. I have
done much research on this, and have found that it can in fact conflict with
other firewalls, and is recommended that the Norton Internet Worm Protection
be disabled if using other firewalls. FWIW.

Thanks. Could you perhaps clarify what you mean by "... a form of
firewall?" Is it somehow more limited than even WinXP's built-in
firewall? I've thought of the product as a specialized anti-virus
utility, as it's name implies.
