Windows Firewall Invisible

In trying to turn off the Windows Firewall to satisfy an installer program
(ADSL router) I found the Firewall control to be invisible. This is a fully
patched Windows XP SP2 Professional system - upgraded from SP1 and patched
via Windows/Microsoft Update. Security Center says the firewall is on but
there is no button. Running firewall.cpl gives nothing. Tried most of the
posted suggestions (netsh winsock/firewall resets, checking policies (all not
defined), installing inf file for firewall, uninstalling McAfee 8.0i
Enterprise. Have not tried deleting registry keys or
uninstalling/reinstalling sp2 (yet) - that seems a little radical. The
computer is not part of a domain.

Running firewall.cpl from a command prompt gives no error message and no
apparent response - as if the program simply exits.

Thanks,

What exactly does the installer request ? - Have you checked
your Event Log for error(s)? It sounds to me like your Service
mappings may not be configured correctly.

Event Viewer accessible by:
Click Start, Run (Type) EventVwr.Msc [Enter]

Check both Application and System logs for red icons that
denote errors. Double-Clicking each entry will display a short
description and event ID #.

How does the ADSL router connect to your system - USB or
a traditional Ethernet NIC ? - The reason I ask is that it isn't
usually necessary to install driver/support code for an AP (Access
Point).

The installer just says it cannot continue with the Firewall enabled (it is
for an Alcatel Speedtouch 510 w Ethernet connection via Dial-up ADSL). Little
choice here - this is a company installation in a company housing compound.

There are no messages in either the System or Application sections of the
Event viewer - info, warning or errors. I have searched for clues, or a way
to just install the Firewall part of SP2, but can find nothing.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Use Services.Msc to temporarily stop the "Windows/Firewall,
Internet Connection Sharing" service. It may indicate it will need
to stop other dependency services as well - OK. Just Right Click
on the service name and choose "Stop" - don't modify it's Startup
Type from "Automatic".

Click Start, Run (Type) Services.Msc [Enter]
*List should appear alphabetical

Thank you for your suggestion - this at least gets the firewall to indicate
it is not on, and allows me to turn it back on from the Security Center. I'll
contact the tech support troops tomorrow and see if this will let the
installer complete.

Now if I could just find away of getting the control panel to appear...

Thanks again, R. McCarty, I'll let you know the outcome.

An update - your suggestion took care of the installer/configuration software
issue. Thanks again!
