Windows File Protection

On no set occasion a windows box appears with this message:

some of the files that are needed by windows are missing
please insert windows disk etc.

Also:
the same error message concerning dll files. it can be
very irratating and would like to now how to stop it.
please help.
 
Try this. Start | Run | cmd | cd\ | sfc /purgecache /scannow with your Windows 2000 CD-ROM in the drive. Let us know if it happens again BEFORE you start installing programs again. This is usually a result of installing software which replaces system files in the install. This really shouldn't happen but it can. Especially if you have turned off System File Check in Group Policy.
