Windows file protection errors

Recently updated to SP4...wrong move. I am constantly getting Windows file
Protection messages; I click cancel (because inserting my W2000 CD doesn't
fix the problem ) and it just keeps popping up. I have tried re-installing
SP4 several times to no avail. How do I fix this short of formatting the
drive and fresh install of W2000?????
