Windows File Protection Error

M

Mike Bishoff

I receive the following error message constantly.

"Files that are required for windows to run properly have
been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain
system stability, Windows must restore the original
versions of these files. Instert your Windows
Professional CD-ROM now."

I've followed the instructions and nothing changes. The
error message goes away temporarily, but will appear
again prompting me to insert my XP CD.

Anyone have any thoughts on how to fix this?

Thanks,

It is quite possible that a virus/worm or badly-written install program has
overwritten some of your system files.
Windows is offering to restore them to the correct version, but when you do,
the virus/worm is just overwriting them again.
If you don't have an antivirus program, you may need to get one to remove the
virus, or may even need to do a reinstall if things are really messed up.
If you do have an antivirus program, it may not have detected the virus (some
"worms" are not detected by many antivirus programs), or it may have removed a
virus, but left the virus in the hidden backup copy of some system files that
windows maintains. Windows then finds that the files don't match the ones in
the backup, and since these are not the version that it expects, it wants the
CD to get the original versions.
You may have to find out what worm or virus has gotten into your machine, and
get a removal tool or instructions on how to clean out that particular pest -
these are often available on many antivirus program manufacturer's web sites.
