windows file protection error

I had to do a repair-reinstall of the OS (XP) yesterday
because Dell recommended it ( :( as they always do)
because certain software wouldn't download (Trillian
Pro). I did it. Everything worked great, except the file
still didn't download. This morning I woke up and the
File all of a sudden downloaded???

I did notice that all of my Windows Updates and update of
my nvidia driver were wiped clean and I needed to
reinstall about 20 windows updates. I was downloading
them, came back about 2 hrs later and saw this error
message:

Windows File Protection
Files that are necessary for windows to run properly have
been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain
system stability windows must restore original versions
of these files.

The network location from which these files should be
copied c:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386/controls.man is
not available.

Contact your system administrator or insert windows xp
kb839645 source files now.

Where are those source files? I put in my Windows XP
disk, didn't know what to do. I clicked on the
option 'retry' that was provided by the error message and
nothing happened.

What do I do? Dell said , as I could have thought,
Repair the OS. Is this necessary? What they NEVER say is
what may have caused this, and when I do this, AM I GOING
TO HAVE TO REDO THE WINDOWS UPDATES, SINCE THEY DIDN'T
FINISH AND I'M GOING TO HAVE TO CLICK CANCEL IN THE
MIDDLE.

And when and if I have to do them again, is the same
problem going to happen.

Thanks
eric
