Windows File Processing

T

Terese King

Good morning..

I need information on HOW WIndows 2000 processes files,
the capability, the process, the speed. If anyone can
point me to a journal, white paper or website, that would
also be of help. Microsoft.com goes into file services
but not the processes themselves.

Thanks

This is such an overly broad question that it's virtually unanswerable.

The operating system uses layered device drivers that involve filesystem
drivers, disk drivers, bus drivers, etc. Then there's filter drivers such as
antivirus drivers, encryption drivers... it gets to be a very complex topic.

I would point you to "Inside Windows 2000, Third Edition" by Solomon and
Russinovich for a good in depth reference.

You can also buy the IFS DDK for more developer information on filesystem
drivers... but that's about a thousand dollars, if memory serves. Search
Microsoft's website to find more on that.

Can you narrow down your question some?
