Window's fails to recognize presence of McAfee

Pepper

I am getting a warning from Window's Security that I have no firewall or
antivirus protection, even though I have McAfee. I have never had this
problem before. I recently installed SP1. Could this be the reason? My
McAfee says that it is on. Do I need to worry? I have Window's Vista Home
Premium. Thanks.

There is a problem of some sort

I know that Vista and XP will tell you you have no AV installed
if the "resident shield" or equiv. is not turned on.

I'd check your settings to see if it is actually scanning in the background.

Other than that, I'd try turning your AV and firewall off,
then back on again

I'm having a similar problem that only started in the last few weeks.
When I boot Zone Alarm pro starts and the icon appears in the system tray.
A short while later Windows security tells me I have no firewall.
I have to shutdown and restart ZoneAlarm before Windows Security recognises
that it is running.

However Windows Security is recognising that my CA anti-virus is starting
during the boot.

This is what the help file for Security Centre has to say about this issue:

Use a firewall that Windows doesn't find

A firewall can help prevent hackers or malicious software (such as worms)
from gaining access to your computer through a network or the Internet. A
firewall can also help stop your computer from sending malicious software to
other computers.

Windows checks to make sure that your computer has a firewall installed and
turned on, and then it displays the firewall's status in Windows Security
Center. If no working firewall is found, Windows alerts you by displaying a
notification in the notification area. If your computer is protected by a
firewall and you still receive a notification, it's possible that Windows
did not find your firewall or the firewall did not report its status to
Windows. Use the following steps to stop receiving this notification. You
should only do this if you are sure that your computer is protected by a
firewall.

To specify that you're using a firewall that Windows doesn't find
Click to open Security Center.

Under Firewall, click Show me my available options.

In the Windows Security Center dialog box, click I have a firewall solution
that I'll monitor myself. If you are prompted for an administrator password
or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Security Center
will display your firewall settings as Not monitored, and you will no longer
receive notifications about your firewall.

Notes
The Show me my available options link is not available when your Firewall
setting is marked On.

If your computer is using a hardware firewall, you can provide another layer
of security by turning on Windows Firewall or another software firewall.

Thank you all for your input. I tried turning my McAfee off and on, but that
didn't help. On a hunch, I did a system restore. That worked.

The same thing is happening to me! Security Center says I have McAfee virus
scan, but it says it's turned off unless I'm running a scan at which time it
says it's turned on. As for the firewall, it doesn't even recognize that at
all. I posted another issue a day or so ago about Windows firewall turning
itself on and when I turn it off (because I have McAfee, it turns on Network
Discovery). I'm unable to have Win Firewall off and ND off at the same
time!! This is new behavior since downloading SP1. I can't do a system
restore (or I should say "I won't") because I've had so many issues with
Vista since SP1 and so many fixes that I wouldn't even know where to restore
to!

Anyone have any suggestions for ALL of my issues? I've been in contact with
Microsoft for 2 months now and they haven't been able to help in any
satisfactory way. I just warned a friend who purchased a brand new computer
with Vista to get rid of Vista ASAP and go back to XP. When I told her a few
of my problems, she decided to take my advice.

Anybody???

I'm not a huge fan of Vista...
but I suspect the problem may have more to do with McAfee

Personally I;ve had much better results with freeware such as Avast AV

I am running Vista Home Premium on a Dell laptop.
I have had it for a little more than a year now.

I automatically check and install MS updates and use McAfee Security. It
came with the laptop and I have renewed it and update it. I am running
version 12.1 of the McAfee Virus Scan (according to the About window.)

Today when I booted up, the Windows Security Center popped up and said under
Malware Protection/Virus Protection that "Windows did not find antivirus
software on this computer". This surprised me very much because, as I stated
earlier, I am running McAfee.

I checked McAfee and it showed that it was running. I checked for McAfee
updates, and it said that I was up-to-date.
I did install a MS update two days ago (12/18). That is the only change I
made to my computer.

Can someone please help me out here?
What is going on with Vista?
Can I provide any additional information?

(A number of the posts on this topic involved XP, but I cannot post to the
Vista Discussions page because it is not working. And, there isn't anyplace
to email for help because the page isn't working. And, I obviously can't post
anything!)

My computer is OK now.
Maybe this can help someone else.

I found another post that suggested that I uninstall and reinstall McAfee.
But, when I tried to reinstall from my McAfee CD, the McAfee installation
window was blank.
So, I contacted McAfee online chat support.
The support rep had me go to the command prompt and enter these two commmands:

REGSVR32 JSCRIPT.DLL

and then

REGSVR32 VBSCRIPT.DLL

I am not sure what they did, but I was then able to reinstall McAfee from
the CD.
And, the Windows Security alert went away.
