Windows Exporer Shutdown

K

Kristi

Running Windows XP Home, receiving error:
"Windows has encountered an error with explorer. Any
information might be lost. Contact Microsoft."

Then my windows shuts down. Each and every time. Very
frustrating. Come on guys and gals, I know you have a fix
for this, just let me know what it is. Thanks a million
in advance if someone can help. :)

Similar here, but screen lock vs shutdown. Have narrowed
it to drwtsn32.exe being run (not by me). Ending that process in task
manager is a temporary cure. Renaming or removing the
file is of no help, the OS resets it. What a pain.

Jack, Dr Watson is part of the error reporting mechanisms in XP. If it is
locking up, it means that the true error is serious enough that not even
this tool is working. Suggestions:

o Have you checked in Event Viewer to see if there are any additional
notes about problems that might relate to a shutdown problem?

o You could also try disabling error reporting in System properties. You
might get a blue screen that has pertinent info regarding the source of
the problem. You'll need to restart or shutdown the system manually.

o Often shutdown errors are caused by background processes or drivers that
do not release properly. Try using System Configuration (Start> Run>
MSCONFIG) to disable all startup programs. Restart and shutdown to test.

o Are you up to date on all recent critical updates and any recommended
updates that apply to your system? I was receiving a screen about
Explorer.exe at shutdown now and then. System would not lockup but had
to wait for Explorer.exe to finish up whatever it was busy with (system
restore, recording last known good configuration, etc). Haven't seen it since
installing the Windows updates that appeared during the last two weeks.

o Visit the shutdown troubleshooting pages for XP at www.aumha.org. Very
well organized site that aids in troubleshooting shutdown problems.
Suggestions and procedures at the site are cross-referenced with the relative
MS Knowledge Base articles.
