I don't know which "discussion group" this belongs in but I am having nothing
but problems with Windows Explorer.... it quits working and has to restart.
I even get the "blue screen of death" now and then. Once when it stop
working a message came up that said VISTA cause the problem and to download
an update & a link was provided.... Downloaded and installed it.. still have
the problem. I am very unhappy with VISTA and Microsoft in general.... I
have had nothing but problems since I bought this computer..... I don't
think I will ever buy a PC again... gonna go for a MAC. Is anyone else
having problems with Windows Explorer????

I've owned my Vista for a year. Never got a blue screen.

Try using the diagnositc tools that the computer manufacturer supplied with
your computer to see if you have any faulty hardware.

Is "windows Explorer" Internet Explorer by chance?

Windows Explorer is the GUI shell in Windows. It is the file windows,
icons, Taskbar, Start Menu, etc..

A message popped up saying there was a problem and this same message said
you needed to download and apply an update?

I know of NO official messages that say a problem can be fixed by applying
an update.

They hooked you.

Click on the Start orb type "cmd" in Start/Search but do not hit Enter.
Right click on the cmd icon at the top of the menu and select Run As
Administrator. Type "sfc /scannow" and hit Enter (there is a space after
sfc). That should repair any bad system files. See if that fixes the
problem.

The day before my computer started having windows explorer stop working then
reprt then restart. Probably 60+ times. Since I had just opened a download
decided it was a trojan or something. Affected the cmd and rundll.exe. I
ended up with about 30 rundll.exe at once going in processes on tskmgr. I'm a
novice has been a real learning curve. Deleted what I could but some just
couldn't be deleted. Cleaned disk and have restored to a prior date. Tried
your recipe for repairing bad system files but the option to run as
administrator didn't come up. Just the usual right click options for
delete/open etc.
Thanks
