windows explorer

I am running XP. I am getting a windows explorer error.
The error states that Windows Explorer has encountered an
error and needs to be closed. I am not using windows
explorer. The error is not allowing me to use the start
button, so I can't get into programs or control panal to
see if I can shut down windows explorer. If I leave the
error message dialog box up, I can use the icons on my
desk top, but can't access anything else. Very annoying.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Windows Explorer is the backbone of windows, you're always
using it. Just manually restart the computer. If error
occurs all the time, then you need to troubleshoot some
more.

I have tried several times restarting the computer. Still
getting the same error message. Thank you for your reply.
