windows explorer

Hello,

There is no Windows Explorer listed in the start menu. I thought it was
supposed to be under Accessories. It is not there. However, if I go to
"run" and type in explorer.exe, then the My Documents folder comes up. Have
I lost Windows Explorer from the computer? And if it is gone, does it
matter, since My Computer seems to do the same thing? Is this any cause for
concern? Thanks for your help.

My Documents actually opens in Windows Explorer. You can copy the icon from
the windows folder and paste it back in your start menu if you like, or you
can just click on My documents or My Computer to open the explorer. You can
also use the same functionality of Internet explorer by typing c: or my
computer in the address bar. As for where your icon went, I can't say, but
as always make sure your antivirus and security software is up to date. : )

Perform the following:

1. Right-click on your Desktop and select: NEW > SHORTCUT
2. In the Create Shortcut window, type in: explorer.exe , and click "Next"
3. In the next window, type in: Windows Explorer , and click "Finish"
4. A Windows Explorer shortcut icon will appear on your Desktop.

Right click on the explorer.exe file and drag and drop onto the start
button. You now have a shortcut to it on the start menu.
Right click on it again, drag and drop to the desktop. Create shortcut here
on the menu that appears, you have a shortcut on your desktop.
Right click again, you can create a shortcut to almost anywhere you want.

Thanks all of you for the replies. I got it put back where it was. I
dragged one of the shortcuts to the right place on the all programs menu.
I didn't get it to work to copy and paste. It seemed when I clicked copy, I
don't know where it went. Yes, all the antivirus, windows updates, antispy,
etc. is up to date. Maybe someone else accidentally deleted it. It looks
like My Computer and Windows Explorer are the same thing. Why have both??
Thanks again for the help.

In the case of files and folders, which is different to text, Copy (and Cut) puts a reference to the item on the clipboard.

Nothing actually happens to the original item untill you Paste or Paste Shortcut. Then the file is copied (and then the original deleted if you Cut it) or a shortcut is made to it.

David,

Thanks for the reply. Maybe I should put this on a new thread. I
understand how to cut, copy, and paste if you are in a window and the edit
menu is there. I don't see how it works if it is from the desktop or start
menu. I don't see where to find it or what the steps are. Although this is
not too important and isn't needed too often.

For Desktop (a special open folder) or Open Folders (such as My Docs)
By right clicking a blank spot , ie not on an icon, in the container you want the action to occur. Open My Docs - right click something and choose Copy. Minimise the window, right click an area of the Desktop where the isn't an icon. Choose Paste. You can Copy from the Desktop to My Docs the same way.

Start Menu
As there is no blank spot to click, right clicking on an item gives a combined menu for that item and the whole menu. You have to use common sense. This ability is often turned off. Check settings by right clicking the Start button, choose Properties - Start Menu - Customise - Advanced - and make sure Enable Drag n Drop is ticked.

You can also Drag objects about. If you drag with the right mouse button it pops up a menu when you release the button allowing you to cancel or check and change the default operation of a left mouse button drag (which just does it with out confirmation).

Thank you very much David. That makes things much clearer. Have a good
evening.
