windows explorer does not open

I can no longer open windows explorer either thru the My Computer link, or
thru accessories, or with the start - run - explorer.exe command. I also
can not access the control panel in the start menu.

These links used to work; don't know when they stopped. If i log out & log
on as a different user, the links work. Obviously something is wrong in my
profile settings but I have no idea where to look or what it could be. Any
suggestions, help, hints?? appreciate any possibilities.

It's IExplore, not explorer. Add I, remove R at end.

try that in Start; Run. If it works, something have trashed your shortcuts.

Pop, maybe you misread the post. He is talking about windows explorer which
is explorer.exe. Internet explorer is iexplore.exe.

What changed between the time things worked and now? Any new
software/hardware installs? Updates from windows update? A standard
troubleshooting technique is to undo the recent changes. Uninstall software
or updates installed through windows update from Add/Remove programs, then
if still not working do a system restore to a date when things worked. Go
to Start | Help and Support and click on System Restore.

Another option, since the problem seems to be confined to that one profile
is to create a new user account with the same privileges, and work in it.
If it works ok, copy the data and settings from your current account to the
new one. Work in that new account. If things are still ok you can delete
the old account. Here are some links to articles with info on creating
accounts and copying accounts.

Thanks for the info. I am going to try your suggestion of creating a new
user profile. I did update some programs as well as the automatic windows
updates. I don't know how long the links have not been working so i don't
know how far back i'd have to go. i'm not sure what updates would then have
to be re-installed.

You can see what updates were installed when by going to the Windows Update
site, doing a custom scan, then click on the link in the left pane for
update history.

If you're not sure when it happened, that can be problematic. The way to
approach it then, if you wanted to back track, is to do it one day at a time
starting with the most recent changes. Uninstall software and updates
installed that day, then system restore. If the doesn't work go back
another day.

This would be a lot of work especially if you had to go back some period of
time. I would try the new account first.
