Windows explorer unexpected shutdown

Sometimes when i open any folder, i get a message saying
windows explorer has to end and asking if i want to send
an error report. This has only started happening once i
installed SP2 for Windows XP. This doesnt happen every
time i open folders. Explorer ends and all open folders
close and then all my icons beside the clock disappear
but are still on.

If you search the last 4-5000 messages for SP2 and explorer
you will see a series of folks with very similar descriptions
of problems in Windows Explorer.

The high degree of similarity tends to make me thing that
these folks are all being tripped by the same bug.

Does it happen when you boot in Safe mode?

Does it happen if you create a new user and switch to that user?

For some folks one or the other of those work-arounds works.
It must be a clue. You can escalate this to MS
support.microsoft.com/windowsxpsp2
and give them all the clues and patterns you have seen.
There is no guarantee their analysis or directions will be
correct, or even that they won't make it worse. But it might
work out.

They concluded I had "some corrupted files" and to repair windows
back to the install state, then install SP2 twice while in Safe
mode. Before I did that someone discovered the "new user"
workaround. I tried that and it worked well enough that I sent
mail back to MS saying that if it worked for a new user and not
the old one, did this still make them think "some corrupted files"?
They haven't answered that in days. But I can imagine what kind
of hell on earth it must be inside there now.

And if anyone tells you "it must be spyware or virus", check that
and if you find nothing, please report that back, hundreds have
been told that and nobody I've seen has confirmed that fixed the
problem.
