Windows Explorer too slow when computer is connected to network

I am running XP Professional (SP1). For some reason, whenever the network
connection is active (ie. network connection is enabled and network cable is
connected to the computer), Windows Explorer is taking enormous (up to 1 to
2 mins.) time to popup right click context menu. Same problem occurs when I
attempt to open any file (using file open dialog) in any Windows application
(notepad, paintbrush, MS-Word etc.).

My search in Microsoft's KB for a resolution of this problem failed to yield
any result.

Is there any fix or resolution for this problem?

TIA

Sudip,

I have the same problem except that it seems to only
affect one of two XP computers on my network, the second
computer works just fine. I have also posted a question
about this, but have not received any response yet.

Let me know if you get anything on this.

Thanks.

I don't know your entire situation, but when we updated the network from NT4
to 2003, we noticed the same problems, until we made the primary DNS address
to our Win2003 server - that solved several lockup and slow down issues.

DNS/WINS setting seems to be OK, as all other XP systems in the network
(with same DNS/WINS settings) works fine.

What I would try to do is to disable the Browse service.

To do so, go to

Start > Run > Type "services.msc" (without quotes) > Look for th
"Browser" service. > Right click on it. > Select "Stop" from the loca
menu.

If this has solved your issue, then go back to the services and chang
the startup type to "Disabled

I have the same problem; xp pro sp2 and right click on any file or folder
takes 10+ seconds before the menu appears. I don't have Novel Client.
