Windows Explorer SLOW

Nothing new installed, nothing changed except now when accessing
folders/files on Windows Explorer the system locks up (not responding) and
does this for about 2 minutes for each new folder or file to open.

If I open Word or Excel and search folders/files, works fine. Just using
Windows Explorer.

Another new thing is System Restore does not work. Get to the point to
select an earlier date, click "Next" and get nothing...no error, no activity,
nothing. Any ideas?

Ran Ad-Aware to try to get rid of any problematic programs that did not
work, attempted system restore, that did not work. Want to try to avoid a
full reformat of the PC.

i would
temporarily disable all sorts of antiviruses, real-time scanners ec.
delete/disconnect any network folders

First, be quite sure the machine is clean:

This involves more than simply scanning with Ad-aware.

Also check to make sure your drive isn't in PIO mode instead of DMA. See
