Windows Explorer slow through dial-in RAS

D

Dana G.

Hello~

I am logging into a W2K/IAS/RAS server via a 56K dialup
connection running W2KPro, and mounting a network volume.
When I use Windows Explorer, everything I attempt to
access via the mounted volume is incredibly slow (for
example highlighting a file, or right-clicking on a file).
As an example this is what I did:

1) Logged into the dialup RAS Server (got a 48.8
modem connection)
2) Mounted the network volume (about 2 seconds)
3) Browsed 3 folders deep into the mounted volumes
structure (about 2 seconds per folder depth)
4) Single left-clicked on Adminpak.MSI, a file ~14
megabytes.

Between the time I left-clicked on Adminpak.MSI and the
hourglass went away and my ability to control Windows
Explorer resumed, the dialup networking connection
transferred 150,000 bytes of data and it took roughly 30
seconds.

When I tried right clicking on a file of a similar size,
over two megabytes of data were transferred before I
finally gave up.

This is a major problem for me because I am trying to do
batch file downloads and remote file administration from
within the volume mapped via dialup RAS. It seems to me
that remote file manipulation and or administration
through a dialup-connection and a volume mounted through
Windows Explorer is extremely time consuming or not
reasonably efficient. Has anybody else experienced
similar inefficiencies? The only way I have found thus
far to get around this problem is to use a client other
than Windows Explorer, such as FTP or pcANYWHERE. Any
input, help, direction, or wisdom that anybody could
provide would be greatly appreciated. I would like a
solution using the Windows operating system, if at all
possible. Thanks in advance for your help.

In all honesty if you're going to need file remote manipulation
you'd be better looking into broadband and vpn connections. Dial
up is a very slow method of transferring current large files.

Also look at NetMeeting and Remote Anything from
