Hello all,

I noticed that many(!) people have posted probs with their windows explorer
being slow or crashing. HOWEVER I did not found ONE reply in any thread
resolving this problem ....

Please don't say it's related to 'old hardware' 'disk fragmentation' and
other rubbish ... this will not help us ... like so many among us I have a
brand new HP laptop, XP SP2, many Virus and Ad aware ascanners installed and
even already performed a Windows recovery etc etc etc ...

The only thing I haven't tried yet is a complete re-install !

Any GOOD suggestions ? Please do not post totaly useless asnwers like 'clean
up your hard disk and delete your tempory files ' or 'run a virus sacnner '
or 'perform an automated W update' or 'try system restore' etc etc ....

DOES anyone REALLY knows a solution ?

Frank

Well a problem like "Explorer is slow" isn't much of an acurate
description either to be frank (frank... heh heh). There is a registry
key you can set to make windows tell you what stage it is in during the
boot process, try setting this and seeing which step it hangs on:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
System\verbosestatus = 1 (1 for enabled, 0 for disabled)

You will get a little more information when you do this. Alot of the
time, slow system starts are caused by faulty/corrupted device drivers.
you could also systematically uninstall devices from you computer and
replace them one at a time untill you track down the issue.

Something else to consider would be services. If you have a
corrupt/oversized service loading when you boot that can considerable
slow down your boot as well.

Is your login/load up time just as slow in safe mode or not? If it is
the problem may be hardware related as the device drivers and services
are not loaded in safe mode.

Just some suggestions for a starting point. To get a true diagnostic
you'll need to prove more detail of the issue.

Hope that helps!

Oh... are you talking about Internet Explorer? Not Regular
Explorer...? My mistake.

Please describe what actually happens when the machine crashes? Do any
error messages flash across the screen? Do you get a blue screen of
death? Are any dmp files deposited on your hard disk?

Have you timed the occurrence of the crash and looked in Event Viewer
for Error Reports? If yes post copies (not incomplete) copies?

Hope this helps.

Please … it’s about windows explorer … please …
Gerry, thank you very much for YOUR(!) post.

Find a copy paste at the bottom of the evt viewer.
‘CD BRANDER’ means ‘CD BURNER’ in english.
'BEEINDIGD' means 'TERMINATED'.
Recently I used for the first time windows movie maker. However I did
NOT burn anything. Maybe this is related ?

I do not get a bleu screen. The explorer window closes
and an error report is generated. I can choose to send it to Microsoft.
Afterwards I can restart the explorer but after some time it crashes again.
Sometimes, but nt always, the active desktop is desactivated. I can be
re-activated without problem.
I can not copy paste the error report since explorer crashes when I try to
acces it on my hard disk. This is the message in the error report:
explorer.exe version 6 0 2900 2180
offset 000bdd07
mod mshtml.dll

I dnt know if dmp files are deposited.

Any suggestions ?

Dutch?

Is one message like this:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7036
Date: 12/20/2004
Time: 02:56:26 PM
User: N/A
Computer: HARDYX
Description:
The IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service service entered the stopped state.

Not important

What Event Source and what Event ID for explorer.exe error.

Suspect spyware! What Microsoft Critical Updates installed since Windows
XP SP1? mshtml.dll version has changed many times since Windows XP SP1
update. What version mshtml.dll in E:\WINDOWS\system32 and in
E:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache, After update November 2005 should be
6.00.2900.2769.

When dealing with a persistent virus / trojan you need to delete system
restore points and not use them as they will contain the virus and put
it back into your system. Turn off System Restore until cleaning is
finished. Also run your anti-virus with updated definitions in safe
mode. Sometimes you need to run an anti-virus from a floppy and Trend
offer one that can be used.

Create a new folder named Sysclean (e.g., C:\Program files\Sysclean, or
just a desktop folder).
Download Sysclean.com (http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp) and
place it in this folder.

Download the latest Controlled Pattern Release zip
(http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp, e.g., lpt123.zip) and
extract its contents to the same folder. See the Readme text file for
additional instructions.

Delete Temporary Internet Files (IE Tools>Internet Options>General)
accepting the option to delete all offline content. Reboot and delete
contents of all TEMP folders and then your Recycle Bin.

Close all running programs including your anti-virus application, go
offline, and run Sysclean. For best results, do nothing with the machine
until the scan completes.

If the scan shows any infections in System Restore files and you're
running WinXP, create a new Restore Point
(Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore), then delete
all but the most recent Restore Point (Start>Programs>Accessories>System
Tools>Disk Cleanup>More options).

Work through the spyware removal programmes etc in turn in safe mode
until you get no results.

Afterwards, update your own anti-virus application and perform another
full system scan.

Finally run HijackThis and post the HijackThis log to the HijackThis
forum here:
http://aumha.net/

You will need to register with Aumha to be able to post.

I've done the scan you advised (although I had done the trendmicro
tools already before ... ), no virussen were found. Some
files however created an error report 'not accesable' I dnt know
is this is normal ?

I already tried HijackThis ... posted the log already, I have done a dozens
of system cleanups, virus scanes, spy ware scans, registry optimalisations,
clean disk tools etc etc ... name one ... I HAVE TRIED THEM ALL !!!!
(BTW I think kaspersky is the best).

Then I read some people had similar problems after installing adobe photoshop
or divx players ..... I uninstalled these two programs ... and ..
ABBRACADABRA !
it seems to work !!!!!!! For the time being I did nt encounter explorer
crashes
any more ....

However I'M FED UP with microsoft explorer and internet explorer !!!

I won't use windows IE any more but will use mozilla fox and I wondered If
you could tell me a good alternative for file browsing too ?
When you know please also tell me how to uninstal windows explorer.

Thank you

Frank

If you try to uninstall Windows Explorer (explorer.exe) , you will wreck
your system. That is the file that brings your desktop and taskbar up.
However, all the shortcuts to IE (iexplorer.exe) can be removed (though IE
will still be on the system) By going to Add/Remove Programs, then clicking
on the Add/Remove Windows Components button and uncecking Internet Explorer.

Goed dat mijn vriend gelijk maakt.

The result you have achieved is interesting.

You did not answer this question! What version mshtml.dll in
C:\WINDOWS\system32 and in
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache, After update November 2005 should be
6.00.2900.2769.

Can you search in Windows Explorer and report what versions of
mshtml.dll are in C:\WINDOWS\system32 and in
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache? Can you also advise what versions of
mshtml.dll are in C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386.

Kunt u in Vensters Ontdekkingsreiziger en zoeken rapport welke versies
van mshtml.dll in C:WINDOWSsystem32 en in C:WINDOWSsystem32dllcache
zijn? Kunt u welke versies van mshtml.dll in
C:WINDOWSServicePackFilesi386 ook adviseren zijn.

Is Windows XP SP2 installed?

What version of Adobe Photoshop was installed? When did you install it?
Why did you decide it might be Adobe Photoshop causing the problem?

Welke versie geïnstalleerd van Adobe Photoshop was? Wanneer installeerde
u het? Waarom besliste u het Adobe Photoshop zou kunnen zijn
veroorzakend het probleem?

It's two times version 6 0 2900 2769

(have automated w update installed)

Don't have a subdir \ServicePackFiles\i386 in
C:\WINDOWS\ ... should I worry ?

Dnt know which version I had of photoshop, can't
check since it's un installed for the moment.

Got the idea from this forum, search for
'windows explorer adobe photoshop' in this forum
and in the first tread called 'windows explorer crashing'
A certain person 'F' talks about it ... don't know where
he got the idea from.

Please let me know if this helped, what about the missing
C:\WINDOWS\\ServicePackFiles\i386 dir ????

Greetings,

So are you Dutch or Flemish?

Don't have a subdir \ServicePackFiles\i386 in
C:\WINDOWS\ ... should I worry ?

Speculating but if you installed Adobe Photoshop after Windows XP SP1
Update it may have replaced drivers etc with earlier versions. How did
you get a copy of Adobe Photoshop and when? Another reason for the
absence of subdir \ServicePackFiles\i386 could a programme tidying and
removing files no longer in active use. The contents would have been
reinstalled if you had decided to uninstall SP2.

Zoete dromen.

Hi,

I too have been experiencing hangs by explorer on startup(20-30 seconds); I
looked for that particular registry key and couldn't find it in that
specified folder. Is this something that SHOULD be there, but isn't? Any
assistance is greatly appreciated!
