windows explorer size and location

When I open windows explorer now it does not remember the
size and location when last closed. What has happened?
 
file -> close and it will remember the size
close with the x and you get the last file/close setting.

location of next window might depend on if you have
cascade windows set on.
 
No offense, but I'm not a rookie, and I know that, but
something else has happened that has made it forget each
time. No other app is giving me this prob. I've also held
the shift key while closing the window with the X box.
Thanks for any additional suggestions.
