Hi,

For the last few weeks, Explorer frequently shuts down
when I have opened my computer and try to right click a
drive. The message says that there has been an error and
explorer has to shut down. Then the machine acts as if it
is loggin off but comes back up in a few seconds. I
noticed that to night, my Norton antivirus did not load
back up when the desktop reappears.

The dialogue says exactly "Windows Explorer has
encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry
for the inconvenience." When I click for more information
it says: AppName: explorer.exe Appver: 6.0.2800.1221
ModName: Unknown Offser:01381000.

When I click technical information, it alwasys points to a
temporary file document called appcompat.taxt

Does anyone know whether Microsoft might have issued a bad
patch or does anyone have information related to this
problem.

Check your startup settings to find out what is causing this, sonce
this may come from software that is running in the background.
Applications that start with Windows can be found here:
- the WIN.INI, section [windows], entries "run=" and "load="
- the Registry keys
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
- the folders
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\START MENU\PROGRAMS\STARTUP
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\{username}\START MENU\PROGRAMS\STARTUP

Thanks Thornsten,

I looked at the msconfig and the registry. I didn't see
anything strange. I am thinking that I have a general
protection fault where explorer is trying to occupy the
same space as another program. Just in case you have any
ideas, I am pasting below the event record from event
viewer. Again my thanks,

Michael

Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2800.1221,
faulting module shell32.dll, version 6.0.2800.1556, fault
address 0x00046983.

Disable all the items in MSCONFIG just to find out if something
interferes with the EXPLORER.EXE. If the problem persists, try with
the System File Checker. Run
SFC /scannow
via Start > Run.
