Windows Explorer Search Hang

I'm having a problem with Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer). When I
search for "Files or Folders" in a directroy with a large number of files
(e.g. Windows) the search will proceed and find files but not complete.
Clicking stop has no effect. Task manager shows the CPU at 50%. I suspect
that since it is a Core-2-Duo processor it is equivalent to running at 100%
on a single processor system. Eventually (Depending on the size of the
directory 5 to 15 minutes) the search will stop and the CPU usage will go
down to 0%.

I have searched through this forum and others and tried a few possible fixes
(Indexing, using Group Policy Editor to change how unresolved .lnk files are
searched for and using MSConfig to disable Startup items) but nothing has
worked so far. Also, I have run extensive virus and spyware scans and the
computer appears clean.

I am running Windows XP Pro with IE7 and all current updates on an Intel
based E6400 computer with 300GB disk and 2GB of memory.

Any Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Have you disabled the indexing service to see if that helps? Also you could
reinstall search. Open Explorer and go to the Windows\inf folder. Locate
the srchasst.inf file. Right click it and select Install. Have the XP CD
handy.

As a work around you could try out the free search tool Agent Ransack. It
works well.

Sorry Bob, I don't know what else to suggest other than a 3rd party search
tool as a work around. I use AgentRansack exclusively in XP.

Oddly enough, browser toolbars can cause this behavior. Once my
colleague uninstalled the UPromise toolbar add-on to IE, the problem
went away. I also understand that the Yahoo Toolbar may cause the same
problem.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't have either of those toolbars but I tried removing some of the other activex stuff I didn't need. Unfortunately it didn't help. Any other thoughts would be appreciated.
