Windows Explorer Search Crashes

S

SCL

I am currently having several problems with machines that are Windows XP
Pro SP2. All the machines have mapped network drives.

Whenever we try to search for files/computers we constantly receive
errors before the search window opens. This happens whether we are
searching a local drive or a network drive.

The error message we get is always the following:

Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting
module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00000000.

I have looked through technet and the knowledge base and have been
unable to find a solution to this problem.

I would appreciate any useful feedback that will lead to a resolution to
this problem.

Many thanks in advance.

I was sent the following email:

"I have been investigating this problem myself as I have XP SP2 and Server
2003 Sp1 machines with the same issue. My latest attempt to fix it is to
disable 'Search Assistant' for explorer. I am still testing but I am hopeful
this will fix the problem.

Here's how to do it :-

Start the Registry Editor
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \
Explorer \ CabinetState \ Right-click an empty space in the right pane and
select New > String Value Name the new value Use Search Asst Double-click
this new value, and enter no as it's Value data Close the registry editor

As this change is only for the current user you will have to apply it to
each user who logs on to the machine."

I have been testing this for a week on three machines that were having this
problem and they seem to working ok now.
