Windows Explorer question

Frequently my computer will grind to a halt - when I bring up the task
manager under processes I find explorer.exe has a mem usage in excess of
100,000K. If I end the process and start explorer again as a new task in the
applications tab, this clears the problem with a mem usage of around 27,000k,
but I find I am doing this several times a day. Anybody know what can cause
this and the remedy.

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the
malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what
programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?
