My Windows Explorer stops working. I have a 32 bit system. Microsoft says I
need to update and gives you the option for a 32 or 64 bit update. I have a
32 bit system, yet when I run the 32 bit system update, it says that the
update does not apply, yet I am still having problems!

Sounds like you downloaded the wrong file for your platform. Click Start >
right Computer > Properties > look at the top of the System Properies page
to see which architecture you are running.

But is it 32 or 64 bit? Home Premium only identies the edition you have
installed.

Well, it sounds like you are installing the wrong file for the version
(32-bit Vista) you have installed.

That's the thing. I installed the 32-bit one and it starts the installation,
then tells me it is the wrong one, that is what I am trying to figure out,
what is going on.

What's the file version of Shell32.dll on your system?

Since the KB:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938979
lists the versions of the files it's going to install, it's possible to
double-check against that list to verify that you have those file versions
already, which thus implies that you actually already have the update
applied. =)

I am not sure how to tell what version of the Shell file that I have, but I
went and searched for some of the .dll files that are listed on the web page
and couldn't fine them through windows search. I have a friend with Vista,
and when he updated, his windows explorer never crashed again, and mine still
does. When I download the 32 bit update, the stand alone installer begins,
and then says searching for updates, then the error message "this update does
not apply to your system" comes up and the stand alone installer exes out.

Click on the Start menu.
Type "shell32.dll" in the typing area there.
shell32.dll will now show up above.
Right-click on shell32.dll in this list.
Select Properties.
From that new dialog, select Details.

What's that File Version number?

That seemingly indicates that you have the update applied already according
to the KB's listing of applicable version numbers. You probably would want
to take this to actual product support.
