Windows Explorer problem

Ever since I bought my notebook with Vista Home Premium installed on it I
haven't been able to copy files from or to an external device or CD. Explorer
shuts down, and I get taken to the screen to install KB938979. I try this,
and am told my system doesn't need this install.
Now I am unable to even move or copy a file from one folder to another on C:
without this happening.
The only way I can get around it is by opening the file (if possible) and
saving to the new destination.
Any ideas on how i can fix an incredibly annoying problem?
Thanks

Since this has been happening since you purchased the notebook, take the
computer back for replacement. It sounds like bad hardware. If you want to
be absolutely sure before you contact the laptop mftr.'s tech support, you
can try:

1. Back up your data by removing the laptop drive and putting it into an
external enclosure. Copy the data over to a working system. If you can't do
that, then you know the drive is bad. If you can do that, put the drive
back into your laptop and restore the machine to factory condition. Refer
to the laptop manual or mftr.'s website for how to do that. If the machine
exhibits the same symptoms after a restore to factory condition, you know
it should be returned and you can tell their tech support that.

2. Or boot with a live Linux CD such as Knoppix or use a Bart's PE to see if
the computer acts the same way outside the operating system. If the
computer behaves identically under Linux, then you know it's a hardware
problem.
