Windows Explorer (Not Internet Explorer)

I am using WXP and windows explorer (not internet explorer) seems to keep
getting slower when doing file functions. To right click on some files it
takes a long time to bring up the file menu (i.e.. delete, copy, move, send
to, etc.) and an especially long time to bring up the menu for a network
file. I know this is something local on my HP laptop since my desktop is
fine. Does anybody know why explorer would slow down or how to find what is
causing it to drag?

What does a scan with a current antivirus program (meaning a version not
later than 2002 and using updated virus definitions) show? Also, remove
spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy from www.security.kolla.de and
Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure to update these programs
before running them. It is best to run antivirus and spyware removal
tools in Safe Mode. If the machine is clean, then perhaps you have too
many programs and/or services running in the background. Here are some

Thanks for the advice Malke. I have already tried these things-both adaware
and spybot-all is clean. In addition, I keep my backround and startup
programs to a minimum including editing the registry to remove unnecessary
programs in the run file. I also have stopped or changed many uncessary
services to manual start. My computer is fairly fast-Pentium 4 1.6 G & 768
Ram. I do have several programs which have listed themselves in the file
menu when you right click on a file-could these cause a slow down in
explorer? Any other things you can think of? Is there a way to change
program options for explorer?

See, that's why it would have been helpful to have *all* the info in the
first post. The only other things I can think of is that maybe you have
too many documents in My Documents or you should defrag. Sorry.

Have also defragged. Are you aware of a way to manage the program options
for explorer and how the other items get listed in the file actions menu
like WinZip etc.?
