windows explorer is shutting down... restarting

laptop w/ vista was used w/o anti-virus software. I am trying to remedy the
following problem. after turning it on... it constantly opens a window that
says "windows explorer has stopped working"checking for a solution to the
problem and before the solution opens it opens a window saying "windows
explorer is restarting" oddly It can still get on-line. but the desktop is
constantly re-booting. I tried restarting in the safe mode and it does the
same thing. I also tried re-booting with it set up (f8) so that it wont
allow it to re-boot windows automatically.. but it still does. I also went
to the windows virus site for a scan but it still does this non-stop. I have
no discs with this sony Vaio laptop.
suggestions please!

ok so what is the "crash" error your seeing?

If it is not showing up whats in the event log?

WHat other craplets are running on this .. assume this is a SONY OEM image +
tons of little craplets?

It does not show a crash error... only opens a window that says windows
explorer has stopped working... and then another opens saying windows
explorer is restarting. your tip to look in the events log has helped. I am
currently trying a mcafee scan.. I tried a MS one scan and it didnt change
anything. Symantec scan does not support vista. The computer says that it
has the renos virus but the MS one scan did not fix it.
