Windows explorer has to shut down.

The first time I press My Computer and try to access a drive after
boot up, Windows Explorer shuts down and asks me to send an error
report. Directly after this, when I press the Start button I find my
internet browser and email program doubled up.

Try running sfc /scannow

It's more like Firefox, Thunderbird, Firefox, Thunderbird. All links
work.

Tried that. Had to press retry quite a lot too. No improvement.
