Getting DEP errors with IE8 and nhl.com

When I try to navigate through various pages of http://nhl.com I
consistently get DEP (data execution prevention) errors and the web page
shuts down. (Try going to the main page and select Standings/Division only
seem to notice this at nhl.com and not at any other sites. The messages
seem to complain about some malicious add-in, but it's hard to believe that
nhl.com would have code like that.

I'm using WindowsXP SP3 and IE8. Avast antivirus. I've tried changing the
settings in the system control panel for DEP, but it still always does it.

Here's an entry from the Event Viewer:

Most likely, an ad being displayed on the page has a malicious script
embedded in it. Do you have the pop-up blocker turned on in Internet
Explorer?

I'm using IE7 and I'm not getting any DEP error going to that page.
Also no error using Opera web browser, which is blocking one of the ads.

Pop-up blocker was on; that wasn't the problem. With IE8 I needed to enable
the InPrivate Filtering option, (a new feature with IE8.) I don't know what
the analogy was with IE7, or it just wasn't checking some of that stuff. It
likely was some code in a banner ad it didn't like, and the Filtering
bypasses it correctly.

InPrivate Filtering blocks ads, so it is blocking the ad with the
malicious embedded code. You were apparently being fed different ads
than I was when I visited, so I did not have the problem. Ads are
delivered by region, among other things.

I do not get the error, but I get a giant banner that notifies me that the
Pop-Up Blocker has done something. Avast is probably doing whatever it is
that you are complaining about.

Avast doesn't create the DEP errors, isn't involved in them, they come
from Windows.....also, I have Avast installed here and I get no error on
that page.

Open IE8
on the IE8 Tools Bar Click Tools

DEP appeared as a configurable option first in IE7 but was defaulted to
disabled because many add-ons up to that time had crappy code that would
generate DEP errors. In IE8, the DEP option was default to enabled so
now all those crappy add-ons would start puking.

Internet Options -> Advanced -> Security section
Enable memory protection to help mitigate online attacks

This is the DEP option. You could disable it and continue using the
crappy add-on. Or you could get rid of (uninstall) the crappy add-on
(and see if there is a newer and better coded version).

See what happens when you start IE8 in its no add-ons mode. If the
problem goes away then you have a crappy add-on generating the DEP
fault. Another cause would be a corrupted install so you need to
uninstall and reinstall an add-on.

I tried the following, in the order shown, to visit the unknown (to me)
web site using IE8 (DEP option enabled) and all worked okay:

InPrivate mode + no add-ons + scripting disabled
InPrivate mode + no add-ons
InPrivate mode
normal mode

So either I don't have the add-on that you have installed causing the
problem or my install of the add-on is still okay but screwed up on your
host. Also, when using the no add-ons mode, a scripting error gets
reported saying "Bootloader" wasn't defined in an ancilliary script file
(connect.php). Since this web site employs Flash then the scripting
provided by that ActiveX control won't function because no add-ons mode
disables that AX add-on. So my guess is you first try the no add-ons
mode to see what happens. If that works (and ignoring the script error
messages) then uninstall Flash and reinstall it.
