If that IrFan Viewer is somehow plugged into IE 7, you should get rid of it.

Does this happen often, or is it a one time deal?

Does IrfanView have an item in your context menu, i.e., "Browse with
IrfanView", when you right-click a folder? If so, try disabling that
shell extension on the Extensions tab of IrfanView's Options > Properties
dialog, by un-checking it.

In my environment people agreed that Windows Internet Explorer
has a lot of problems. Particularly after all these "updates" which
instead improving functionality of WIE - in fact are slowing it down.

Why WIE is MUCH slower than its older predecessor - IE7?

Ensure you have the latest version from http://www.irfanview.com/
If your problems persist then contact infraview for support on their viewer
(They have their own support forums)

Hi Louis--

Is it now working or not?

If Explorer crashed in Vista --it can happen now and then. Event Viewer may
give you a more detailed error (type "eventvwr.msc" no quotes into your run
box that you can bring up by typing the Windows key + R
simultaneously)>Windows Events>Application or Systems. I'm pretty
disappointed in Event Viewer because despite a half billion dollar marketing
campaign this is still a campus that can't communicate meaningful error
messages to its end users and pssst--guess what a lot of 6 figure CTOs don't
know the error messages from American Idol either.

The point is --is your Windows Explorer working now? As to
http://www.irfanview.com/ Irfanview the most notable thing is it's free.
It's long been one of the most popular imaging applications. It doesn't
relate to IE or WE in any downside way in Vista, and you get the chance to
control its associations. I'd recommend trying it to anyone.

A good response for you (I don't know the nature of your crash and even with
the help of Event Viewer you may or may not), is to run SFC. No downside and
it may replace files that are corrupt.

Bring up the Search Box above Start Button>type in "cmd" no quotes>righjt
click the word cmd when it comes up>click run as admin on the context menu>
and at the cmd prompt type "sfc /scannow" no quotes space after the first
"c". SFC will scan thousands of files and replace corrupt files with intact
ones and possibly improve your chances of having Explorer crash.

I'm not tyying to be picky here JDR, but because MSFT named them similarly
ridiculously back in the day August 24, 1995 in the Win 95 Plus Pack when IE
1.0 (code named Spyglass) was introduced, and Windows Explorer the file
organizer showed up *in its current form in Win 95 at the Dec. 1995 Launch.

IE is a browser, and WE is the file organizer. When you hybridize the name
with the term WIE, I know you mean IE but it's a little confusing.

I can't answer the question why IE7 is slower *for you on your machine(s)
than IE6 because after using IE7 for nearly two years on the same machine
before it became available to install on my XP boot, it is definitely
faster.

I suggest you do some hygeine on your box. Here's some tips:

The most common reason for this symptom is hyporesourcia. I would advise
you to shoo the pigs away from the resource troth. I'm going to give you a
number of steps, but usually if spyware or malware or malicious scripts
rarely aren't the cause of this, defragging with a competent defragger
regularly (MSFT has one in Vista) and I recommend Perfect Disk from Raxco,
and cutting services and processes that Vista has on by default that you
don't need--you don't even have the hardware or software for some of them
works very well.

Below is a general outline for cleaning and speeding your PC:

******Speed PC and Control CPU Tips/Steps******

SPEED AND CPU:

_______________

1) Trim processes you don't need in TM. Google them or "search engine of

your choice them" if you have to.

2) Go to

services.msc in run box and turn off services not needed and there are some.

3) Run System File Checker.

SFC: http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

In Vista run it from an elevated command prompt. Right click command on

start and run as administrator.

4) Run 3 or so spyware scans Windows Defender, , Adaware, and Spybot

5) Probably the most important for speed consistently and efficient resource

use DEFRAG with www.raxco.com or www.diskeeeper.com with 15% free space on

drive if DK and or >5% if Raxco's Perfect Disk.

6) Unck items from msconfig start tab you don't need starting and some

won't start--peoiple who think just uncking for many are naive because there

are 12 places things can be started including several reg keys like Run Once

keys and there are serveral.

7) Turn off Messaging service--it's a security vulnerability and it slows

you

8) Defrag very often every other day actually.

9) Turn off indexing.

10) Clear TIF and %temp% files (delete) and go to safe mode to get as many

as u can.

10) Do troubleshooting with msconfig.

11) Do Clean boot with msconfig utility and search for the directions here:

Defragging with a decent defrag every day will make a huge dent inefficient
resource/CPU use.

Perfect Disk has a 5 month full functionality trial on now for Windows
Vista.

If you run Win One Care, it has its own spyware scanning, so you don't need
Windows Defender which ships with Vista turned on.

Good luck,
