last night my son downloaded an activex that was needed to view a video.when
it had downloadedhe noticed that a free security program had been downloaded
and installed with it ,i would have expected norton 2007 to stop this ,mabe
it did but he allowed the installation, anyway imediatley after windows
explorer stopped working, shut down, started again and just kept on doing this
with no way to stop it.I tried all of the options available at startup ,safe
mode, system repair and system restore(which i cant get to work properley in
vista but thats a seperate issue)in the end i had to do a reinstall from my
partition.I think this was a classic case of program incompatibility in vista
..I noticed that other people have had this problem aswell so i thaught i
would post this as a warning about downloading software that's not
compatible..dont know how were supposed to know if it is compatible?.I wish i
could have got some details of the software to share but couldnt access any
properties before windows shut down. REMEMBER VISTA USERS YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

A good healthy warning, but try and get your system restore sorted out. It
may well have saved you the reinstall.

Chances are your system restore files are corrupt. About the only thing
you can do is shut off system restore, reboot and turn it back on. I did
read in a previous post that someone was successful using system restore
in safe mode when it wouldn't work otherwise.

Try blaming Norton and your own stupidity, NOT Vista.
Norton, as an anti-virus, is a piece of crap.
There are a lot of music and video files that try and con you into
downloading activx, a sure way to be corrupted.
Take responsibility for YOUR own actions.

in reply to mick ;1st...it wasnt me that downloaded anything ,2nd i havn't
yet established if this was the problem as quite alot of people are having
the same problem with no apparent underlying cause,3rd, norton 2007 and
previous versions i have used all seemed to be quite adequate for my modest
needs,4th although iam not an ITguy (as you must be to make such sweeping
comments about norton, vista and my stupidity)i do try to keep up with modern
technology and usually manage to fix any problems my children cause and
finally if it wasnt for these problems that everyone apart from you seem to
have then people like you wouldn't have anything to fix.Now iam going to try
gls858's suggestion as it was alot more helpful than yours

Although I might partially agree on the issue of user responsibility, I have
to say that IMO Norton is just fine, I'm using 360 and it works great never
had any problems...
