Windows explorer has encountered a problem & needs to close

Need a solution as I cannot fix this problem with my windows XP
I'm finding that this doesnt seem to be happening with my main C:, but it
happens everytime I try to navigate/use my other 2ndary hard drive & / or my
external maxtor drive.
Everytime I open a file/move between folders in Windows explorer I get an
error - "Windows explorer has encountered a problem & needs to close", along
with an error report.
Then the only way I can remove this error screen is by opening task manager
and ending the task - being the opened explorer folder.
I've looked at other threads but have'nt been able to fix my problem.
below is the report I copied from my eventvwr - application error info:

Is this the right course of action, a lot of other threads show people
having problems when they do this.Could you pls elaborate?
Cheers

SFC is System File Checker. It compares the system files with those
stored as backups. If there's a problem with the program, it's because
they don't have the XP CD sometimes required.
