Windows Explorer hangs when viewing pictures

Often, Windows Explorer hangs and brings down XP Pro when viewing
folders full of images with thumbnails. Does anybody else have this
problem, and are there any work-arounds?

yeah, I currently have this problem too Jason...in a way, it's good to ehar
it's not just my system that is affected in this way. Also, if I try to
access any jpegs from inside a program (eg Word), the program closes down in
an instant. I've posted on here for help last night, no replies yet though.

that is exactly the same type of problem I am having. Even after I copied the
whole folder (about 400M size) to a CD, when I try to open the same 2
sub-folder from the CD , the Explorer window hangs too.
Ran AV against the folder and it ran clean. The folder contains only jpg,
and bmp images.
Yes if anyone has come across this problem, and managed to resolve it,
please help.

Anyone here a solution yet? It also happens with my video folder. Sendinbg
error reports to Microsoft (for 2 months) doesn't help either.

After a lot of reading here and the HP site (no help from Micrisoft), I found
a way to stop it from happening to me. I don't know enough computer stuff to
be sure of what I did to "cure" the problem, but here are the steps I
followed:
Updated Norton's Internet Security and ran a full system deep scan.
Updated Spyware Doctor and ran a full deep system scan.
(Those were done to be sure there was no other problem--recommended by HP)
Disconnected from the internet (I'm overly cautious)
Changed the DEP settings to NOT protect Windows explorer (START>CONTROL
PANEL>SYSTEM>ADVANCED>PERFORMANCE tab>SETTINGS>DATA EXECUTION PREVENTION
tab>TURN ON DEP FOR ALL PROGRAMS AND SERVICES EXCEPT THOSE I SELECT>selcet
Winfows explorer) and restarted.
I then went to the video forlder, got a memory error message, and changed
the view to "details" instead of "thumbnail" and moved some files to a new
folder. The idea was to make what it was trying to show me use less memory.
It now works fine.
HP RECOMMENDS THAT YOU RESTORE THE DEP SETTINGS TO ORIGINAL SETTINGS, which
I did and it still works.
If I understand correctly, DEP is only with XP SP2, but I am not sure.
I hope this helps someone else. As soon as my headache is gone I'll check
back.
