Windows Explorer hang up

Suddenly, I find that I no longer have access to Windows Explorer (the Win XP
"Search" utility). I am able to open it from the Start menu and then insert
a file to look for (e.g., tool.dll), but then after clicking on Start, the
program hangs up. The only way to end it is to close the window when I get
the error message that "The program has stopped responding..." Please
advise...

Explorer|View|Status Bar then try again. Does the Status Bar indicate
progress?

automatically fix.

Most interesting janfeb, but completely wrong. Windows Explorer is the
operating system graphical user interface and there is no Scandisk in
Windows XP.

Laurie, see "Why Doesn't Search Work" on MVP Kelly Theriot's site here:

on ur desk top double click my computer > right click hard drive c >left

"error-checking" tool.big deal its still scan disk with a different name.
click start >
accssories > and there 1/2 way down is windows explorer."displays the
hierarchical structure of files, folders, and drives on your computer. It
also shows any network drives that have been mapped to drive letters on your
computer. Using windows explorer you can copy, move, rename, and search for
files and folders. For example, you can open a folder that contains a file
you want to copy or move, and then drag the file to another folder or drive."
