Windows Explorer - File Property Sheet

F

When right clicking a a file and going to its property sheet --Summary tab, the Keyword metadata I enter is saved. However, when I click Apply and go to Windows Explorer-->View -->Details, the Keywords Data does not appear. So far the only other data file I see where keyword data is entered, applied (saved) and appears in PDF files. Anybody know what the particular behaviours of Property Sheets.
I most MP3 applications make use of them for tagging. Most of my MP3 tags do show up in the Explorer Windows under details if I select the corresponding columns. I was expecting the same behaviour with Documents.

Add the text under Comments on the Summary tab and then add Comments from a
folder's View menu | Choose Details.

I'll admit it's a work around. I hope this will suffice in the long term.
Wes, could you give me an explanation (or a link to one) of why keywords did
not work in this case? One applicattion gives me access to reading and
writing keywords to a file's property but explorer desktop does not.
However, the property sheet does. I find that strange. I expect Windows
Explorer to give me the most global access to my files from both within
Desktop and the Property Sheet. Seems like an anomoly to me.

To see the Keywords you have to open a file's Properties.

Keywords is NOT an available Column Setting. Comments is.

<quote>
Available Column Settings
Owner, Name, Size, Type, Date Modified, Status, Attributes, Author, Title,
Subject, Category, Pages, Comments, Copyright, Date Created, Date Accessed,
Attributes, Artist, Album Title, Year, Track Number, Genre, Duration, Bit
Rate, Protected, Camera Model, Date Picture Taken, Dimensions, Company,
Description, File Version, Product Name and Product Version

Note: Name, Size, Type and Modified settings are enabled by default.

Not all file formats will support these additional column settings. For
example, a Microsoft Word document can contain Author information, but a
Notepad document cannot.

I'm probably going to pound the crap out of this thread but Keywords is
available in my configuration as an option to display in Explorer's -->
View --> Choose Details..for Columns and it's in the Property Sheet's
standard of metadata fields. Unfortunately, I'm going through Usenet and
can't upload a pic of my config. to my server to post proof of it. In any
case right now, you are telling me that they are not linked. So do I need a
seperate app to read and write or link to the Keywords field which is linked
to the one in the column?

In any case you have been very helpful and your MS-MVP moniker assures me
you know what you're talking about. I appreciate you telling me HOW IT IS
when I'm asking WHY IT IS. It's a little frustrating when I'm failing to do
something as trivial as taggiing a file within the world's most prolific
operating system. Maybe Vista will hold more promise for me in this regard
in a few years .

Don't count on it. I have been wrong many times before and I am sure that I
will be again. LOL

I believe you are right. I can only pass along what I observed and no
concrete evidence of what you suspect (ie. the vendor or a certified tech.).
The third party app is either or both Adobe or PaperPort because the
Keywords metadata appears within their apps. It also appears on the
Paperport's Modified desktop explorer. I probably will look at scripting
some copying/pasting between the two so that metadata is available within
both Windows Explorer and Paperport via Comments/Keywords. I'll betcha that
the Registry holds the Keys that allow the data to flow through to the
Desktop in one app. I still think that Windows can globalize the metadata
through to Desktop Explorer. However, I have a hunch its through one of the
Registry Hives.
Anyway, it's been a good thread for me. Thanks Wes.

If you have PaperPort (PaprPort.exe) open and you are in Details view
Keywords is a choice for column headings. This has absolutely nothing to do
with Windows. It only applies to Paperport. I have PaperPort 8.0 SE on my
other machine.

All from PaperPort HELP.

keyword: A word assigned to a file for search and retrieval purposes. In
PaperPort, you can assign keywords to PaperPort image items (.max files) and
then search for items based on those keywords. You specify the keywords in
the Summary tab, available when you select an item, and then click
Properties on the Item menu. Use a comma or a space to separate each
keyword.

item properties: Specific attributes of an item that you can use when
searching for PaperPort image items (.max files). Item properties can
include one or more of the following, depending upon the type of item: the
item name, the name of each page in a multi-page item, the author, assigned
keywords, added comments, and annotation text.

PaperPort image item: An image file created by the PaperPort program. Image
items can be any type of photograph, text document, line art, or physical
item that you scan to the PaperPort desktop. All PaperPort image items are
in the MAX file format and have the .max file name extension. Like JPEG
files, you can specify the image quality of your .max files. PaperPort
provides a lossless Best Quality setting that creates image items of a high
quality, but with a large file size — and a Good Quality setting that
produces a high level of quality while reducing the file size.

Item Properties
In the Item Properties dialog box, you can view or change information about
your PaperPort image item. The information is useful as search criteria when
you want to search for the item at another time.

* Page name — Displays the name of the item. If the item is a multi-page
item, the box shows the name of the current page and lists each page in the
item.

* Author — Enter the name of the user who created the item or the person who
you want to associate with the item.

* Keywords — Any words that you want to assign to the item for search and
retrieval purpose. Use a comma or a space to separate multiple keywords.

* Comments — Enter any comment text that you want to assign to and store
with the item. You can copy text from any file or document and insert it
into this field.

Tip
You can copy or paste text into the Keywords and Comments boxes.
