Windows Explorer errors caused by NTDLL.DLL

J

J Tinsby

When I run Windows Explorer I get an error message that says ntdll.dll
is responsible. I can send a log of the message if that will help
someone.

Is there a fix for this? I have another ntdll.dll file I downloaded
but it's the same one I already have so I never installed it.

XP with SP2 and IE 7 WMP 11

Thank you all in advance

I seem to recall that this is an issue connected with IE7. Sorry, but I
don't remember specifics. Start by going to Google Groups Advanced Search.
Use a search term that describes your problem, constrain the search to the
IE7 newsgroup and the date to very recently. The IE7 newsgroup is:

microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general

If you can't find the answer with Google Groups, then post to the IE7
newsgroup.

You can also check MVP Sandi Hardmeier's canonical IE7 site. Sandi has
workarounds, known issues, troubleshooting, and links. This may be the only
site you need.

Hi Malke,

Note that this is a Windows Explorer problem not Internet Explorer, I
have never seen it using IE7. I have Firefox as my primary browser.

Would your suggestions still be the same for me knowing that it's
Windows Explorer and not IE7?

Thank you,

Yes. Windows Explorer is the Windows graphical user interface. Because
Internet Explorer (all versions) is completely entwined into the operating
system, it has a direct effect on the system. Please note that I did not
say your error was definitely from IE7, just that I seem to recall a number
of posts connecting IE7 to this error. You'll need to do the research and
the first place to start is where I pointed you - the IE7 newsgroup using
Google Groups Advanced Search.

Hi again Malke,

I have found nothing specific on any of the sites or groups you
mentioned.

Can I safely run the system file checker without having it replace
files included in security patches etc? I don't want it to put older
versions of files where newer ones reside.

Thanks again,

Malke,

I will do that as soon as it happens again, Sadly I can't duplicate it
at will, I can be working on digital photos or using Windows Explorer
and it just happens. I make no association to any specific program
when it happens.

Thanks for your help it's most appreciated.

Then we will need to wait until it happens again. It's very important to

Since you started helping me I haven't seen an ntdll.dll error, but
that doesn't mean it's fixed.

Hope these logs help you diagnose what the heck is going wrong!

Thank you,

Hi Malke,

Here are some of the error logs from the event viewer:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Application Error
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1000
Date: 1/2/2007
Time: 11:57:50 AM
User: N/A

Description:

module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault

(snippage)

All those logs just show the same error but at different addresses. Take a
look at this KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;329692

It talks about getting a hotfix, which is easy to do.

Here are a few more suggestions that I'm just throwing out:

1. Test the RAM. There's a description of how to do this here:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Hardware_Tshoot

2. Uninstall any third-party toolbars such as the Yahoo and Google toolbars.

3. Uninstall/disable any third-party add-ons to IE7. You can do this from
IE7's Tools menu, I believe.

4. Try the hotfix.

5. Have a local professional take a look at the machine.

Unless you come up with the exact text of a Stop Error, I'm not going to be
able to give you a definitive diagnosis on a machine I can't see. I would
definitely test the RAM, though.

Hi again Malke,

I will get the hotfix, even though it's 5 years old (eek) and test the
RAM as you suggest.

I am a bit leery to install that fix since it says that "Therefore, if
you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends
that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this
fix. "

I have all the latest patches and service packs, and as you can see I
don't have the error all the time, sometimes it goes for a week or
more maybe longer without ever doing it! Grrr

I understand you can't troubleshoot the machine without at least
seeing the exact text of the message. I'll supply that the next time
it occurs.

Thanks again for all your help!

If the hotfix is 5 years old, forget it. Don't do it. Do the other stuff
instead.

Did you ever find a fix to this problem? I have the same problem and no one
can seem to help me. My computer tec person believes the best thing to do is
reinstall the entire OS and reformat the hard drive, which I think I will do
at this point. Unless you found a solution..... Any help would be greatly
appreciated. I read through all of your communications and it seems your
problem was never really resolved...

I just found a fix to this problem. I can not believe it actually worked for
me.

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-n...?highlight=windows+explorer+crashes+ntdll.dll

Check out this site. I did what they said and it actually worked.

"Apparently the problem was linked to this column handler issue for image
files.

"the windows column handler for adobe photoshop's feature of viewing image
files in a thumbnail-like view by default was casuing troubles in folders
that had long path names.

"so the fix was to disable the thumbnail feature for photoshop files by:

1. right-click on file
2. properties
3. photoshop image tab
4. uncheck generate thumbnails

You can click on any image you have saved with photoshop and then follow the
above directions. I hope this continues to work for me but I am relieved.
